1769272757Code 8422 Lepanto LithographColor lithograph on cardboard from the early 1900s, with its original period wooden frame, depicting the 1st-class battleship Lepanto; at the top is the emblem of the Italian Navy. Good condition, with humidity stains. Dimensions: 72 × 51.5 cm (28.3 × 20.3 in). The Lepanto was one of the most original and advanced units of the late-19th-century Royal Italian Navy and, together with her sister ship Italia, represented a radical turning point in battleship design. Once again designed by engineer Benedetto Brin, she was laid down in 1876, launched in 1883, and commissioned in 1887 as a vessel intended to face the major European fleets, emphasizing speed and firepower rather than traditional armor. She was armed with four 431-mm guns mounted in armored turrets, had a displacement of about 13,000 tons, and was capable of exceeding 18 knots—an exceptional speed for a battleship of the period. Lepanto never took part in actual combat but played an important deterrent and prestige role, participating in large-scale maneuvers, cruises, and representative missions, arousing great interest and debate among foreign navies. With the rapid evolution of naval technology, she gradually became obsolete; she was decommissioned in the early years of the 20th century, used as a support ship, and finally scrapped in 1923. She remains in history as one of the boldest experiments in Italian naval engineering. Lepanto was built at the Royal Naval Shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia, one of the principal state shipyards of the Royal Italian Navy.

The Castellammare di Stabia shipyard belonged to the State: founded in 1783 by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies under Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, after the unification of Italy in 1861 it passed to the Kingdom of Italy and the Royal Navy, maintaining the status of a state-owned shipyard and becoming one of the main naval industrial centers in the Mediterranean.
