1769271383Code 8422a Duilio LithographColor lithograph on cardboard from the early 1900s with a contemporary wooden frame depicting the 1st-class battleship Duilio, with the Italian Navy coat of arms at the top. Good Condition. Dimensions with frame: cm 72.5 x 51.5 – 28.5 x 20.3 in. It was one of the most powerful and innovative ships of the 19th century and represented the ambition of a united Italy to establish itself as a major naval power in the Mediterranean. Designed by the engineer Benedetto Brin, it was laid down in 1873, launched in 1876, and entered service in 1880. Classified as a 1st-rate battleship, it was intended for direct engagement with major enemy units. She impressed the world with her revolutionary features, including four massive 450 mm guns mounted in armored turrets, an armor belt up to 550 mm thick, a speed of around 15 knots, and a displacement of over 11,000 tons. Although she never participated in any major naval battles, she played an important deterrent role, influencing foreign navies and participating in maneuvers, representation missions, and training activities. With the rapid technological progress of the late 19th century, she gradually became obsolete, was modernized, decommissioned in the early 1900s, used as a support ship, and finally scrapped in 1909. However, she left a fundamental legacy as the pinnacle of 19th-century Italian naval engineering and the basis for the development of the great battleships of the 20th century. Duilio was built at the Royal Naval Shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, while her sister ship was built at the La Spezia Arsenal.

The Castellammare di Stabia shipyard belonged to the State: founded in 1783 by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies under Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, after the unification of Italy in 1861 it passed to the Kingdom of Italy and the Royal Navy, maintaining the status of a state-owned shipyard and becoming one of the main naval industrial centers in the Mediterranean.
