1764950450Code 8259 Scale ModelScale model of the three-dimensional representation of the tests of Otto Lilienthal's Normalsegelapparat, his most famous glider and one of the first historical examples of a production aircraft. Dimensions: 15 x 15 x 5 cm – 5.9 x 5.9 x 2 in

It was designed and built between 1893 and 1896 as a single-seater glider made of wood and canvas, scientifically designed by Lilienthal to imitate the flight of birds. The Normalsegelapparat had a relatively large wing surface and a curved profile designed to generate lift, and the pilot controlled the glider by moving his body to bank and direct its flight. This model is considered the first mass-produced glider, sold to multiple buyers, and very important for the subsequent development of aviation. Lilienthal conducted hundreds of experimental flights with the Normalsegelapparat, reaching modest altitudes but demonstrating the fundamental principles of controlled flight. Otto Lilienthal (1848–1896) is considered one of the pioneers of aviation: he built and flew dozens of gliders starting in the 1890s, scientifically studying the flight of birds and translating his research into practical designs. He died following a glider accident.
