1764951068Code 8259b Scale ModelScale model of the three-dimensional representation of the flight tests of the "large flapping-wing aircraft" conducted by Otto Lilienthal in an attempt to replicate bird flight. Dimensions: 20.8 x 10 cm – 8.3 x 8.3 x 4 in

The Grosser Schlagflügelapparat, a large flapping-wing aircraft, is one of Lilienthal's most ambitious and experimental projects, with which he intended to imitate the flight of birds. The actual dimensions of this model are: wingspan 8.5 m, wing area 17.5 m², wing depth 2.5 m, total length 5.3 m. According to records, the model was completed shortly before Lilienthal's death in 1896 following a glider accident, but no flights were recorded. Otto Lilienthal (1848–1896) is considered one of the pioneers of aviation: he built and flew dozens of gliders starting in the 1890s, scientifically studying bird flight and translating his research into practical designs. His best-known design was the Normalsegelapparat — a monoplane glider considered the first “series” aircraft in history (between 1893 and 1896), sold to several buyers and considered fundamental to the subsequent development of flight.
