22201512424734Code A115 Aircraft sextantThis black metal sextant is placed in its original box shaped like the instrument, woodend and bakelite, complete with accessories, leather strap for carrying and closing with double brass hook. Good condition, a broken lens. Box 25x25x20 cm - 9.84x9.84x7.87 inches. The sextant is signed Bubble Sextant Mk IX n. 8890, English manufacture of the WWII. A label about the last check on the sextant indicates "Air Precision 5, Av Denis Papin Plessis-Robinson (Seine)", a French laboratory of maintenance and repairing of precision equipment for aircraft.

The RAF took into service in 1938 the latest sextant designed by P.F. Everitt of the firm Henry Hughes & Son that was already makers of the RAF Mk VIII; the new model was called Mk IX, and used during the Second World War.

Maker of aeronautical and marine navigational instruments, the Henry Hughes and Son (1828-1947) was originally a clock maker firm in the East End of London that later made sextants and chronometers. In 1947 it merged with Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd. becoming Kelvin & Hughes Limited.
