The stethoscope is an instrument used in the past to auscultate the heart or lungs of the patient, allowing to transmit sound without support the ear directly on the skin of the patient. The stethoscope (from the greek στήθος, Stethos-chest, and σκοπή, skope-observation) was invented in France in 1816 by René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec. It is said that he got the idea after being forced to use a rolled notebook to auscultate the heartbeats of an obese patient, because he could not auscultate it simply backing up the ear. Following the stethoscope was perfected, through the use of a wooden cylinder. They were built in different materials and in different shapes; some stethoscope were made in two pieces, to be carry better in the doctor's bag.
