Blood-letting is one of the oldest medical practices practiced by several ancient peoples, including the inhabitants of Mesopotamia, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Maya, and the Aztecs. In Greece, the blood-letting was already in use at the time of Hippocrates, but it gained popularity thanks to the theories of Galen about the humoral system. Galen believed that the blood was the dominant humor, the one that most needed to be controlled, and in order to balance the humors a doctor would remove the blood in excess from the patient. Even after the humoral system theories fell into disuse, the practice was continued by surgeons and barbers-surgeons. The pole with red and white stripes of the barber shops derives from this practice: the red one represents the blood taken, the white one represents the hemostatic forceps used, and the pole itself represents the narrow stick in the patient's hand to dilate the veins. Blood-letting was used to treat a wide range of diseases, becoming a standard treatment for almost every disorder.
