Inside the lid a label reads: Regia Fabbrica di Istrumenti Chirurgici dei Fratelli Lollini Bologna via Belfiore n. 365. Second half of the 1800. Very good condition. The box has two compartments: in the upper one there is a steel saw with a rosewood handle, two steel scissors signed by Lollini, 5 steel scalpels with a rosewood handle signed by Lollini, and another 4 surgeon instruments made of steel and brass. On the lower shelf there are 4 steel surgical knives with a rosewood handle signed by Lollini, two nippers, a pincer, hammer and chisel, all made of steel and signed by Lollini. The box measures cm 43.5x14.5x7.5 - inches 17.12x5.7x2,95.
Many Italian instruments dated back to the nineteenth century come from firms in Bologna that, at that time, enlarged their business on the European markets. It is the case for example of the Fratelli Lollini "suppliers of the House of His Majesty the King of Italy", makers of instruments and of many kinds of surgical equipment, orthopedic equipment and tools for veterinary surgery, cutlery, razors, etc., holders of certificates in numerous national exhibitions and in particular awarded the first prize at the Universal Exhibition in London in 1862 and the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867.
The period can be defined as antique surgery goes from the first written records relating to surgical practices contained in the Code of Hammurabi (1792 - 1750 BC) until the nineteenth century. Already the Code of Hammurabi established fees for medical benefits and penalties in the event of damage caused to the patient, sentences ranging from a simple fine to amputation of a hand, and despite the limited knowledge of anatomy and disease, surgery ancient was amazing for the quality of the techniques and instruments used. The greatest enemies of the old surgical infections were, however, widespread, and the pain for the patient during surgery, problems solved only at the middle of the nineteenth century.
