In general, dioramas depict in small-scale half boat models with scenes of navigation and often with the outline of landscapes rendering them as realistic as possible, and they are contained in a wooden box with the trasparent glass front. They were born in the nineteenth century aboard sailing ships and made by skilled and imaginative sailors in their free time.
The diorama is a close relative of the model and ships in bottles. The dimensions ranging from those of a bottle to those of a museum display case. The diorama function is to overcome the limits of the didactic planning to allow a romantic vision of navigation. The sea is of cardboard, from the funnel comes a smoke gray wool and waves are topped with white geese. The scene may be centered around a maneuver to enter the harbor, on a naval battle or a crossing of sailing ships in the Atlantic. It the nautical equivalent of a model railway scene.
