1760197175Code 8263 Diorama NAuticoNautical diorama in a rectangular wood and glass display case of the French battleship Suffren, launched in 1899. Italian manufacture, early 1900s. Good condition, signs of use. Display dimensions: 35.5 x 9.5 x 25.5 cm – 14 x 3.8 x 10 inches.

The battleship Suffren, named in honor of Admiral Pierre André de Suffren, was built in Brest in 1899 and launched on July 25, 1899. It was 125.9 meters long and 21.4 meters wide, with a speed of 17 knots. During the First World War, it served as a convoy escort and participated in the Dardanelles Campaign, which the Germans captured in 1916 off the coast of Portugal, sinking rapidly.

Model making was revived in the 15th century, again for religious reasons, but this time as votive offerings, even though the most important and valuable models were those built by shipyards. Indeed, until the 17th century, ships were not designed with a blueprint; the length, beam, masts, and armament were decided upon, and then a trusted shipyard would build the ship "by eye" according to the instructions. To convince the sovereign or minister who should finance the construction, however, it was necessary to show them something, and to demonstrate what the ship would look like, a model was built, often large in size, and the better it was made, the better it responded to the marketing hype of the time. Often, the king would fall in love with the model and keep it for himself, which is why many of these models—true works of art—have survived to this day, all jealously guarded in various naval museums.
