1763652513Code 8296Scale model, Ligurian-made, from the late 19th century, depicting a two-masted schooner. The vessel features a gaff rig, main and garter sails, a pronounced bowsprit, and a slender hull, typical features of cargo schooners used for deep-sea fishing, the transport of light cargo, and coastal navigation. Good condition. Dimensions: 70 x 1.2 x 56 cm – 27.5 x 4.7 x 22 in.

The schooner was originally a warship, often used by Mediterranean sailors, particularly the Ottomans, Venetians, and Genoese. Its relatively small and fast shape made it ideal for activities such as piracy, patrol, and raids. Schooners had a good balance between cargo capacity, maneuverability, and speed, making them perfect for quick missions and sudden attacks. Over the centuries, the schooner evolved and became more versatile, adapting to civilian as well as military uses. In the 19th century, as European naval powers began to modernize their fleets, the schooner became a vessel type increasingly used for the transport of light cargo, for patrol purposes, and even as a pleasure craft.

Ship modeling has ancient origins and arose for religious reasons. Not content with the banality of one's own life, man longed to project another—an eternal one—into an afterlife that, to be reached, symbolically required a means of transportation: a boat to cross a river. The oldest known model is a silver vessel approximately sixty centimeters long, found in excavations at Ur, Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), and dates back to 2000 BC.
