1763206734Code 8330 Cutter ModelScale model of a late 19th-century English gaff cutter, built in the 1950s, constructed of wood with cotton sails. The model features a long, tapered hull, with a slender stern and an external rudder, typical of racing boats. It has a single mast and a gaff-rigged mainsail with an upper yard, called a gaff. Good condition. Dimensions: 56 x 8 x 62 cm (22 x 3.2 x 24.4 in)

The cutter originated in England in the 18th century and is, generally, a fast, maneuverable vessel with a single mast and multiple sails. It was initially used as a workboat and for coastal services. Between 1700 and 1800, it was employed by the Royal Navy for patrol, customs, and maritime mail transport; it had to be robust, fast, and capable of navigating in all conditions, often with a skeleton crew of just one. The Cornish Pilot Cutters are famous, used to transport pilots from ports to large ships arriving from the Atlantic.

In the mid-19th century, the gaff rig and slender hull were also adopted for pleasure and racing sailing; the first to organize competitions were British yacht clubs. The gaff cutter's golden age lasted from 1850 to 1910. After the First World War, the Bermuda rig took over due to its greater simplicity, but cutters remained highly prized by enthusiasts and are still considered icons of vintage sailing.
