1774973688Code 724 Trophy ShieldThe "Elkington Challenge Cup" trophy shield, a commemorative award in hallmarked silver made in 1909 by the English manufacturer Elkington & Co. of Birmingham. Good condition. Dimensions: 26 x 3 x 39 cm - 10.3 x 1.2 x 15.4 in. The trophy was awarded in 1909, at the Birmingham Cattle Show, a prestigious British livestock exhibition held between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to Sir Richard Cooper, Bart's (short for baronet), an industrialist and landowner active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, well-known as a breeder of fine livestock. It is a silver shield mounted on a shaped oak support. The surface is richly decorated: ears of wheat appear in relief on the sides, while in the center is a show bovine, symbolizing the livestock competition for which the prize was awarded. At the top is the civic coat of arms of the city of Birmingham, with a masonry crown and the motto "Forward," emphasizing the institutional link with the host city. The prize was awarded for the specimen known as Pan of the Burn, a famous Aberdeen-Angus bull born in 1905, which won several British championships in the early 20th century. The trophy is called the "Challenge Cup – Commemorative Shield," a formula indicating a significant award. The following elements can be recognized from the hallmark: E & Co, the manufacturer's mark, the anchor symbol of the city of Birmingham, the lion passant indicating 925/1000 sterling silver, and the letter K indicates the date.

Elkington & Co. was one of the most important English silversmiths and plating manufacturers, founded in Birmingham in 1836 by brothers George Richards Elkington and Henry Elkington. The company played a decisive role in the industrial development of electrolytic plating. In 1840, the company patented an innovative galvanic silver plating process that allowed for the depositing of a uniform layer of silver on base metal objects, revolutionizing the industry by producing elegant and durable items at a more affordable cost than solid silver. Thanks to this technology, the company experienced rapid expansion, becoming one of the largest British manufacturers of both sterling and plated silverware, distinguished by its technical quality and aesthetic sophistication. Elkington & Co participated in the major international exhibitions of the 19th century, including the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, obtaining prestigious awards and consolidating its international reputation. Over the years, branches were opened in London and other cities, collaborating with leading designers and producing objects in various styles, from Neo-Gothic to Neo-Renaissance to the more sober lines of the fin-de-siècle period. The company created not only tableware and decorative objects, but also major public commissions and monumental works in plated metal, demonstrating great technical and innovative prowess. Throughout the 20th century, while maintaining the brand's prestige, the company underwent mergers and corporate transformations, reflecting the changes in the British silver industry. However, the Elkington name long remained synonymous with excellence in silversmithing in Birmingham and around the world.
