This is a barometer made of mahogany wood and was the most widely used type of barometer until the appearance of the aneroid barometer. The rear compartment houses the glass siphon barometer tube. A small iron or glass weight, placed on the level of the mercury in the short part of the siphon, rises and falls with the level of the liquid. A wire connects the weight to the pulley and is held taut by a counterweight. Two hands are fixed to the center of the pulley: one moves on the dial as the atmospheric pressure varies; the other, made of lost-wax cast brass and depicting a coiled snake with a hand in its mouth, allows the pressure variations to be read via an acorn-shaped adjustment screw located in the lower part of the barometer. Seven atmospheric conditions are indicated on the white opaline dial.
