Barometer
1747156261Code 8067 BarometerTorricellian mercury barometer in mahogany wood, complete with rare spiral alcohol thermometer that rests on an elegant frame of leaves and flowers in lost-wax cast brass with temperature indications in degrees centigrade printed on white opaline, signed L’Eng. Chevallier Opticien du Roi Place du Pont Neuf N. 15 Paris from the mid-19th century. Good condition. Measurements cm 34x6.5x101 – inhes 13.4x2.7x39.7. For safety during transportation the barometer will be shipped emptied of mercury. The mercury will be placed in a sealed container in the package with the barometer. This is a barometer made of mahogany wood and was the most widely used type of barometer until the appearance of the aneroid barometer. The rear compartment houses the glass siphon barometer tube. A small iron or glass weight, placed on the level of the mercury in the short part of the siphon, rises and falls with the level of the liquid. A wire connects the weight to the pulley and is held taut by a counterweight. Two hands are fixed to the center of the pulley: one moves on the dial as the atmospheric pressure varies; the other, made of lost-wax cast brass and depicting a coiled snake with a hand in its mouth, allows the pressure variations to be read via an acorn-shaped adjustment screw located in the lower part of the barometer. Seven atmospheric conditions are indicated on the white opaline dial.
