1676026771Code 7525 FigureheadFigurehead in carved oak depicting a female figure whose body has the shape of a siren, symbol of fertility and protection, with female features in the upper part and fish tail instead of legs in the lower one.
Northern European manufacture dating back to the second half of the 19th century. It is a refined sculpture that almost certainly portrays the owner’s wife or lover, who commissioned a good sculptor of the time, probably a madonnaro, to create the figurehead. The work brings out numerous details, the hair framing the finely sculpted and well-proportioned face with an ecstatic expression and is gathered within a headdress whose shape recalls the statue of liberty in New York. The generous and turgid breasts are uncovered, a bunch of grapes with leaves is carved on the pronounced belly, the grape as a symbol of freedom of the senses and earthly pleasures as well as being a symbol of fertility, wealth and Abundance which brings back the life.
It was carved in oak wood, and due to its features it certainly belongs to a merchant ship, almost certainly a medium-sized brig. Its measurements are 60 inches in height, and 12 inches in maximum width. The carving was done by hand with the use of a round carving gouge. The lack of arms is typical of the figureheads of the second half of the nineteenth century, when for practical reasons, since the arms came off with a certain frequency due to sea shocks, or were damaged by the jib sheets during tacking, it was preferred do not highlight them.
1686152598Code 7565 Antique FigurehaedAntique wooden figurehead depicting Giacomo Uncino better known as Captain Hook, famous pirate and the main antagonist of Peter Pan. He is so called because instead of his right hand he has an iron hook, his hand was cut off by Peter Pan during a fight and then fed to a crocodile, which liked the hand so much that he hopes to eat the pirate as well at the which one continues to hunt.
The work, in carved chestnut wood was created by a good Ligurian sculptor ain the early 1900s, of excellent workmanship portraying the half-bust of a bearded man, the right eye bandaged and the hook instead of the right hand, while the left hand holds a large sword and a bandana as a headdress.
Measure cm 35x27 altezza cm 88 – inches 13.7 x 10.6 x 34.6
Chestnut is a precious wood and very resistant to bad weather and wind.
The broken sword was restored in an earlier period, otherwise the state of conservation is very good.

1693668984Code 696 Antique FigureheadFigurehead depicting a female figure with loose hair and a belt that tightens her waist; it was carved in lime wood, scientific name tilia, a wood widely used in carving works, which would suggest a ship built in an East Indies shipyard around the end of the 19th century, a frequent fact in many ships of the Royal Navy, although the present sculpture for the features it certainly belongs to a merchant ship. Its dimensions are 163 cm in height – 64.20 inches, 48 cm – 18.8 inches in maximum width measured at shoulder height and 30 cm – 11.8 inches in depth. Beneath the more recent layer of light green paint are traces of a brownish-brown colouration, probably a paint used for wood conservation. The sculpture was done by hand using a gouge. The lack of arms is typical of the figureheads of the second half of the nineteenth century, when for economic and also practical reasons, since the arms detached with a certain frequency due to rough seas, or were damaged by the sheets of the jibs during tacking, it was preferred to resort to busts.
