Taylor Instrument Companies was a US manufacturer based in Rochester, New York. The business began in 1851, when George Taylor and his partner Kendall manufactured thermometers in Rochester and sold them from their wagon. The company was renamed Taylor Bros. in 1872, and in 1900 it acquired Short & Mason (of London), a firm founded by Thomas Watling Short and William James Mason in 1875 at 40 Hatton Garden, London. For a brief period, Short & Mason manufactured the Taylor line of compasses in England, but production was shifted to the United States around 1915–1918.

The earliest historical references to the use of magnetic directive force in Europe date back to the late 12th or early 13th century, attributing the exploitation of the magnet's properties to the people of Amalfi. Gimbal suspension first appeared around the middle of the 16th century. An exact description is found in the brief treatise *De la esfera y de la arte de navegar* by Martín Cortés (1551), which provides precise instructions for constructing the compass. The great discoveries of new lands from the mid-15th century onwards are largely attributable to improvements made to the instrument.
