1784020884Code 8550 Slide RuleAntique spiral slide rule made of wood, brass, and papier-mâché, designed in 1878 by Professor George Fuller of Belfast, an engineering lecturer at Queen’s University. It was manufactured by Stanley in the late 19th century and comes in its original mahogany box. Good condition; there is a tear in the paper on the cylinder. Box dimensions: 46 x 11.5 x 11 cm (18.1 x 4.5 x 4.4 in).

The logarithmic scale of the slide rule is arranged in a spiral around the surface of a cylinder to increase the scale's length, thereby enhancing calculation precision. The logarithmic line consists of 50 turns, and every four-digit number is either marked on the scale or falls between two marks, allowing for easy determination of exact four-digit results. This type of slide rule was the most successful; it was equivalent in length to an eight-fold linear slide rule and enabled readings to three or four decimal places.

George Fuller (1829–1907) A British engineer and academic associated with the city of Belfast, he served as Professor of Engineering at Queen’s College between 1873 and 1884. Trained as an engineer, he combined his academic career with professional practice, distinguishing himself notably as the inventor of the “Fuller calculator”—a cylindrical, spiral slide rule patented in 1878 that enabled highly precise calculations and remained in use for a long time. Although not a household name, Fuller is remembered in the history of 19th-century engineering for his contributions to the development of calculating instruments and to university-level technical education in Belfast. William Stanley (1829–1909) The son of a mechanical engineer, he began working with his father in 1849, immediately introducing improvements to technical drawings while simultaneously creating new instruments. The study of drafting instruments was well-suited to the demands of the Industrial Revolution; sectors such as surveying, engineering, architecture, and navigation were expanding rapidly worldwide. Vast regions—such as the Indian subcontinent—were being surveyed, while nautical charts were being drawn for immense stretches of ocean. This climate of innovation prompted William Stanley to open his first workshop for the production of drafting instruments in Holborn, London, in 1854.
