The bifacial axe is one of the most important tools of human prehistory: it emerged approximately 1.7 million years ago during the Lower Paleolithic, likely with the Homo erectus populations in Africa. The bifacial axe is a prehistoric stone tool obtained by chipping two opposite faces of the stone until it forms an oval or almond shape with sharp edges. This type of tool required complex mental planning and technical skill, as the maker had to foresee the final shape of the object. This tool was used to cut meat, work wood, break bones, and perform numerous daily tasks. Over time, its production spread from Africa to Europe and Asia through human migrations. For over a million years, the bifacial axe remained surprisingly similar in shape, a sign of its effectiveness, and continued to be produced even by later species. Its long history bears witness to significant progress in the evolution of intelligence, manual dexterity, and the ability to transmit technical knowledge between generations.
