1781015369Code 733 Cork DioramaA late 19th-century cork diorama depicting an imaginary three-dimensional view of Windsor Castle, an example of "cork art," a popular Victorian craft technique for creating valuable architectural souvenirs. Good condition. Dimensions: 49.5 x 5 x 39 cm – 19.5 x 2 x 15.4 in.

The work exploits the natural textural and chromatic variations of cork to recreate the porosity of the ancient stones of the royal fortress, with the iconic crenellated towers, bastions, and the famous Round Tower, carved and overlapped to create a sense of perspective. The composition is enriched with landscape details created with fragments of rougher cork to simulate tree foliage and steep terrain, while small, flat, shaped inserts evoke natural and decorative elements, as seen in the stylized swan that seems to glide across a powder blue background simulating the sky or the waters of the Thames. At the bottom right, a cork scroll bears the inscription "WINDSOR C. The whole is enclosed in a deep, solid wood box frame with a gilded inner profile that illuminates the scene. This three-dimensional scene is made entirely of finely carved natural cork, a Victorian technique called corkwork, typical of artisan workshops that became popular in England in the mid-19th century and was primarily used to depict castles, ruins, romantic landscapes, and famous views. Cork, a lightweight and easily workable material, was cut, engraved, layered, and modeled in bas-relief to recreate rocks, vegetation, and architecture, then mounted in deep frames that protected its fragility.
