1784368937Code 8563 Terrestrial GlobeTerrestrial globe produced in the late 1930s by the French geographer J. Forest; the cartouche reads: "Dressé par J. FOREST Géographe – Girard, Barrèere & Thomas Editeurs 17 – 19 Rue de Buci. Paris." In addition to a clearly defined map of the landmasses, the globe depicts ocean currents and the major trade routes of the era. It features an octagonal wooden base and a papier-mâché sphere covered with lithographic paper.

Girard et Barrère was a cartographic publishing firm founded in 1934; it took over the production of Henry Barrère (1890–1930) and P.H. Barrère (1931–1933). Between 1946 and 1959, it operated under the name Girard, Barrère et Thomas. J. Forest produced a wide variety of globes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily for school use but also for the home. Its prolific output included table globes—some on turned, ebonized wooden bases—floor-standing globes, and innovative designs, such as terrestrial globes on mechanized rotating bases or globes incorporating cigarette lighters. In the 20th century, Forest produced illuminated globes featuring modern aluminum bases. Forest globes were mostly in French, though some were produced in English and Spanish for export. In the early 20th century, the geographical publishing firm Girard & Barrère evidently succeeded Forest, continuing to offer Forest globes from the same Paris address on Rue de Buci that Forest had used. During the early and mid-20th century, the firm also produced globes and geographical publications under the name Girard, Barrère et Thomas. There may have been a merger with the 19th-century globe manufacturer G. Thomas.
The Paris Meridian was defined on June 21, 1667, by mathematicians from the Academy, but the measurement of the meridian was not completed until 1718 by Giovanni Domenico Cassini and his son Jacques Cassini. In 1740, César-François Cassini refined the line, and the meridian was subsequently remeasured between 1792 and 1798 by Jean-Baptiste Joseph Delambre and Pierre Méchain to serve as the basis for establishing the exact length of the meter in 1799. The Paris Meridian was abandoned in favor of the Greenwich Meridian during the 1884 International Conference in Washington. Reasons for this included the fact that there was virtually no inhabited land at the antipodes of Greenwich; a British promise to adopt the metric system in exchange for France relinquishing the Paris Meridian; and the fact that most nautical charts at the time were of British origin, meaning that adopting a meridian other than Greenwich would have necessitated the replacement of a larger number of charts. France did not officially adopt the Greenwich Meridian until 1911.
